From 1985 to 1991, one of the great political dramas of the twentieth century unfolded in Russia. Although it began as an effort at reform from above, the process of transformation was snatched from its initiators and became a revolution. Unlike the revolution of three-quarters of a century past, the new Russian revolution featured no vanguard party and no armed insurgency, and was not made in the name of a class or a single identifiable program or principle. Unlike many other revolutions, it was not fought to craft nationhood or to recapture lost national sovereignty. It was a popular, democratic revolution, but it differed from cases of “redemocratization” experienced in many other countries in recent decades. It was a revolution of a different type, waged by unlikely revolutionaries. The rebellion of most of its heroes did not predate the onset of the revolution itself. |

It is tempting to refer to (commutative) S-algebras as (commutative) ring spectra. However, this would introduce confusion since the term "ring spectrum" has had a definite meaning for thirty years as a stable homotopy category level notion. Ring spectra in the classical homotopical sense are not rendered obsolete by our theory since there are many examples that admit no S-algebra structure. In any case, the term S-algebra more accurately describes our new concept. With our theory, and the new possibilities that it opens up, it becomes vitally important to keep track of when one is working on the point-set level and when one is working up to homotopy. In the absence (or ignorance) of a good point-set level category of spectra, topologists have tended to be sloppy about this. |

During the last two decades major changes have been taking place in worldwide coffee production. The most significant of these changes has been the massive increase in the quantities produced. ICO statistics show consistently increasing production levels particularly over the last 15 years reaching a record level of 120 million GO kg bags in 2002. Over the same period there has been a significant decrease in the average price paid for coffee on world markets which fell to USD cents 47 per pound in 2002 compared to 120 cents in the 1980s. The basic cause of the decline in coffee prices has been one of oversupply with the increase in coffee production in recent years outstripping demand by several percentage points. There has been a steady accumulation of large stocks of coffee, particularly in importing countries, which have put additional downward pressure on coffee prices. Thus in recent times many coffee producing countries have seen a catastrophic decline in export earnings despite increasing production, and the incomes of many coffee farmers have been reduced to the point at which they are struggling to survive. The impact on the finances of millions of small farmers in lesser developed countries has reached crisis proportions. |
