The author is a freelance science journalist, writing regularly on astronomy and space science for New Scientist and the Observer. He is also closely associated with amateur astronomy, and for 7 years edited the astronomy magazine Hermes. Does life exist elsewhere in space? This book is an attempt to tell the story of the search for life in space, a story which should appeal to every human being. The book begins by looking at scientific basis for the belief in life elsewhere in space, and at the attempts by scientists to find such life, either by sending spacecraft such as Viking in search of lowly life forms on the planets of our own solar system, or by listening to radio telescopes for signals from advanced civilizations on planets circling other stars. The book also considers how we might colonize space and travel to the stars, as well as speculating upon the consequences of such actions.
