Physical theories, while devised to model a particular range of phenomena, are evidently linked in a hierarchical fashion. It is this structure which keeps fascinating me. In statistical mechanics, my scientific home-town, the link between atomic and macroscopic properties is one central issue. There we are taught that the emergence of a more restricted theory from a more general one has a richer structure than merely letting some parameter tend to infinity. I understood at some point, by accident, that similar issues appear in the dynamics of classical charges coupled to the Maxwell field. Since I could not find a satisfactory discussion in the literature, I decided to write up my own account.

This book originates from a series of lectures taught to students of aerospace engineering at the University of Manchester over the course of five years. These courses include aircraft performance, aerospace flight mechanics and helicopter theory. In the process, I have taken advantage of other material I have taught in supersonic aerodynamics. Over time, the material grew in scope, to include more advanced research issues of interest to the professional engineer. The book is now proposed as a reference on the subject of atmospheric flight mechanics and performance. The material presented covers a broad range of aspects in aircraft flight, relative to fixedand rotary-wing aircraft. I have excluded from the discussion rockets and re-entry vehicles, which are powered by other means, and operate in transatmospheric flight. These vehicles are the subject of space sciences.

The American Institute of Physics Handbook has won wide acceptance among scientists and engineers. It is just such a degree of acceptance that has stimulated the issuance of this revised and updated third edition. A number of important proteins and enzymes contain copper ions at their active sites. These copper protein sites are associated with a variety of vital biological functions, including oxygen transport and activation, electron transfer, iron metabolism, and superoxide dismutation. The protein ligand imposes an unusual geometric and electronic structure at the copper site. As a consequence, copper proteins often exhibit unique and characteristic spectral features compared to small molecule copper complexes. Studying these spectral features provides insight into the correlation between active site electronic structure and biological function.

This book is about radio frequency (RF) transceiver system design for wireless communication systems. Most digital communications texts focus on the system design of the digital base-band rather than the RF section. The text is written for RF system design engineers as well as RFIC design engineers involved in the design of radios for digital communication systems. It is also appropriate for senior undergraduates and graduate students in electrical engineering. The text develops systematic design methods of RF receivers and transmitters along with a corresponding set of comprehensive design formulas. Attention is given equally to the analysis of the RF systems. This Report represents the first scientific committee effort by the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) devoted solely to radiation protection at nuclear power plants.
