This book is a simple, clear and visual introduction to the workings of a steam locomotive, written specifically for those with no technical knowledge. Written to provide a simple explanation of how a steam locomotive works and designed to appeal to the widest possible audience, using clear explanations and diagrams, generous in number yet straightforward in context. The process of learning the required knowledge to work with steam locomotives, or simply to develop a further understanding, can take considerable time because the best current texts on the subject were originally written to aid staff working through apprenticeships during the steam era. To address the needs of today's readers, the complex engineering of the steam locomotive is unraveled by use of a large number of easily understandable diagrams, explaining the function of the components in a step-by-step manner. There is no technical knowledge required on the part of the reader, nor is there any requirement to understand engineering drawings, because the diagrams and explanations are carefully approached. Nevertheless, the book should also appeal to the technically minded, as there are few who understand the steam locomotive in its entirety, a subject which encompasses many engineering subjects including structures, dynamics, thermo-dynamics and fluid flows. Starting with a basic introduction to the principle of the steam locomotive boiler, the book goes on to provide explanations of both coal and oil firing. Further detailed chapters cover all the essential components, including gauge glasses, injectors, control valves, mainframes, cylinders, valve gears, lubrication, air brakes, vacuum brakes, auxiliaries and cab layouts.

This complete and illustrated guide to railroad signaling in the U.S. simplifies and presents the utterly bewildering array of mechanisms, procedures, and rules that have evolved since the 1830s to promote safety, impose control, and disseminate information on America's railways. In addition to providing a brief history of North American signaling from the nineteenth century onward, Brian Solomon provides photos of equipment and explanations of not only how it works, but how it is used and what it all means. Solomon also explains how trains on the same route are given "precedence" or placed in pecking orders and how routes are broken down into digestible segments called "blocks" that help dictate the speed and manner in which a train is driven. The result is a fascinating look at the development of communication on the rails, from the days when slips of paper describing an engineer's track orders were held on a metal hook for him to grab on the fly, to today, when instructions are transmitted via computer. Major manufacturers of signaling equipment are represented.

The year 1827 marked the completion of the United States’ first railroad--and the beginning of a transformation of American life. This book, spanning nearly two centuries, offers an exhilarating tour of the railways’ inroads into the economy, society, and culture of North America. Illustrated with more than 400 historical and modern photographs and period advertisements, The Complete Book of North American Railroading takes readers back to the birth of the railroads, then travels through the “Golden Age” from 1900 to 1950 and on to the railways of our day. Locomotives, from steam to electric and diesel; passenger travel; freight operations; and infrastructure, including stations, bridges, depots, roundhouse, railyards, and signaling are all thoroughly examined and amply illustrated. Authors Kevin EuDaly and Mike Schafer delve into the history, the culture, and the technology of the railroads as they have carried travelers across the continent, brought goods to market, connected businesses in peacetime and war, and enriched the canon of American folklore and the quality of everyday life.

The image of a little red caboose trundling along behind a long freight train is a classic slice of Americana. With the help of nearly 300 marvelous modern and historical images depicting cabooses of all colors, this collection traces the development of this iconic, bygone rolling stock from the nineteenth century to their almost total demise by the mid-1990s. Bobber, cupola, bay window, and transfer cabooses are shown at work across the United States, in the process presenting the grand geographic scope of North American railroading. The photography is accompanied by detailed captions discussing caboose construction, function, history, and locations depicted.

Away from the main lines, there were the rural branches to places such as Westerham and Hawkhurst, lines that grew in importance during the hop-picking season. Kent also had two light railways, the Kent & East Sussex and the East Kent, which retained their independence up to the formation of British Railways in 1948. Although much of the Kentish economy was based on Agriculture, there was also the Kent coalfield, the Royal Navy at Chatham, paper mills north of Sittingbourne and much else to attract traffic to the railways. Whilst the majority of London commuter services were, by the 1950s provided by EMUs, it was not until the end of the decade that the Kent Coast electrification scheme saw the main lines electrified and the demise of steam on boat trains such as the legendary 'Golden Arrow'. The bulk of freight traffic remained steam-hauled into the 1960s. The book covers the entire county, locations featured include Margate, Ramsgate, Dover, Folkestone, Dungeness, Ashford, Tenterden, Hawkhurst, Canterbury, Faversham, Maidstone, Rochester, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Westerham, Sheerness and Orpington.

Home to one of the earliest railways in the country, the Leicester & Swannington, Leicestershire was for many years almost a private fiefdom of the Midland Railway, though later other companies made inroads. This was an area rich in mineral wealth with both coal and iron ore deposits providing much freight traffic. Today, the railways of these two counties are a pale shadow of what they once were. Whilst some stone traffic remains, the passenger network has effectively shrunk to the ex-MR main line through Leicester and the cross-country route from Nuneaton through Melton Mowbray to Peterborough. The GC and the GN and LNWR joint lines have been completely closed, although a section of the former survives as the preserved Great Central, based at Loughborough.

The railway scene in the county of Hampshire was dominated by the lines of the former London & South Western Railway, whose main routes to Portsmouth Southampton and Exeter all passed through the county. The LSWR also operated several secondary routes, such as the line from Alton to Winchester (now partly preserved as the Watercress Line) and branches, such as those to Bordon and Bishop Waltham. Other company's lines also served the county. These included the southernmost extremity of the Midland & South Western Junction Railway which terminated at Andover, the GWR-owned Didcot, Newbury & Southampton Railway, the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway's line along the south coast which served Portsmouth and a famous branch crossing over to Hayling Island. These incursions into LSWR territory provided a variety of train operation which lasted well into the British Railways era.

Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, the 35 members of the 'A4' class of Pacific locomotive built for the London & North Eastern Railway are among the most iconic locomotives ever built in Britain. With their streamlined looks, the new locomotives epitomised the styling of the 1930s when they were introduced to the East Coast main line and brought a revolution in speed to services between London and the West Riding, the North-East and Scotland. One of the class - No 4468 Mallard - has an additional claim to fame: in July 1938, Mallard broke the world speed record for a steam locomotive, set by a German design two years earlier, achieving 126mph on Stoke Bank and is a record that still stands today. Published to co-incide with the 70th anniversary of the record run on 3rd July 1938, Mallard and the A4 Class is a pictorial tribute not only to one of the most famous locomotives ever built, but also to the rest of this enduringly popular class. With over 160 colour and mono illustrations, the book explores the origins and operational record of the locomotives both in LNER and BR service and in preservation. Compiled by David McIntosh, a professional railwayman whose involvement in the operation of preserved steam on the main line gives him a unique perspective on the class, this lovely book is a vivid portrait of some of the best-loved locomotives ever built in Britain. This is a book which will certainly appeal to all those with an interest in the history of LNER locomotives, but in a wider sense will be fascinating reading for anyone who wants to know more about this class of record breaking steam locomotives.

The Snowdon Mountain Railway is unique among Britain's railways, quite literally a Swiss mountain rack-and-pinion railway translated to the grandeur of Snowdonia to ascend Wales' highest peak, Mount Snowdon. Built in 1895 by the Snowdon Mountain Tramroad & Hotels Company, it is usually best remembered for the tragic accident that occurred on the first day of public operation in 1896. It overcame that awful event and has established a well-earned place as one of the most popular tourist railways in Wales. Unusual among Britain's passenger-carrying railways, the Snowdon Mountain Railway was built without Parliamentary authority on private land, a situation that limits the amount of historical information available in public archives. Research carried out by railway historian Peter Johnson has uncovered many new insights into the railway's fascinating history. Stunning scenery and a unique railway combine to make this a fascinating book that will appeal to railway enthusiasts.

Once the second-largest steam locomotive builder in the U.S., American Locomotive Company (Alco) produced 75,000 locomotives, among them such famous examples as the 4-6-4 Hudsons and 4-8-4 Niagaras built for the New York Central, and the 4-6-6-4 Challengers and 4-8-8-4 Big Boys built for the Union Pacific. Alco Locomotives is the first book to tell the full story of this company central to American railroad history—and beloved by railfans for its rich heritage and its underdog appeal. Noted rail historian Brian Solomon looks back at the founding of Schenectady Locomotive Works in 1848 and proceeds to cover that company’s merger with several smaller locomotive builders in 1901 to form Alco. Solomon describes the locomotives that made Alco’s name around the world, from the standard designs like Mikados, Atlantics, and Mallets to the more powerful and flashy post–World War I models. His detailed, richly illustrated narrative re-creates the drama of a tough, ambitious company in the American tradition—rising again and again to the demands of an ever-changing industry and economy. Solomon also covers Alco electrics (built in partnership with GE), as well as the company’s successful and quirky diesel offerings, including the RS-2 and RS-3 road switchers, FA/FB road freight units, PA road passenger diesel, and the wares of Canadian affiliate Montreal Locomotive Works. Enlivened by numerous historical photographs, modern images, curious details, and firsthand accounts, this history is a complete, fascinating, and fitting tribute to a true icon of American railroading.
