The metronomic variations of the Earth-Moon system and of theEarth-Sun orbital patterns produce gravitational and temperatureeffects that alter the physical environment on the Earth’ssurface. These give an interpenetrating effect of forcing cyclesranging from twice-daily tides, day-night alternations, varioustidal patterns and the annual solar pattern. All of these havebeen used palaeontologically to give precision to short-termage determination in the past.
It is cycles of the Milankovitch band that are showing promiseof enabling new practical timescales to be established for partsof the geological record. These depend on changes in the Earth-Sundistance and changes in the tilt of the Earth’s axis withrespect to the Earth’s orbit round the Sun. There is increasingevidence that small-scale sedimentary rhythmic couplets mayrepresent the effect of such changes. The disentangling of theinterpenetrating cycles to produce an orbital forcing timescaleis an exciting problem and challenge for palaeobiology and sedimentology.These should enable numerical dates to be given to bio- andchronostratigraphical timescales and eventually enable manyEarth processes to be analysed in real time.
The papers in this volume represent major new developments insedimentological, paIaeontological, geochemical and stratigraphicalresearch being undertaken in this field.

The recent research domain of asteroseismology studies the internal structure of stars, which is not directly observable, through the interpretation of the frequency spectra of stellar oscillations. The basic principles of asteroseismology are very similar to those developed by earth seismologists. Stellar interiors can be probed from oscillations because different oscillation modes penetrate to different depths inside the star. Asteroseismology is the only available method to derive the internal structure of the stars with high precision.

В сборник включена серия работ, которые всесторонне характеризуют особенности колонки реголита «Луна-24» и слагающих ее пород. Материалы статей описывают геологическое строение района посадки станции, особенности приема и первичного изучения колонки в лаборатории, литолого-морфологические особенности реголита и типы пород. Особое внимание уделено выяснению различными методами деталей строения колонки «Луна-24» и специфике ее стратификации. Детально рассмотрены петрографо-минералогическая характеристика пород колонки, химизм их минералов, петрохимические и геохимические черты пород и реголита. Специальные статьи посвящены определению абсолютного возраста пород, изучению радиоактивности реголита, изучению инертных газов, характеристике на основании исследования треков экспозиционного возраста частиц реголита.
В ряде статей рассматриваются результаты применения специальных прецизионных методов изучения вещества реголита - ЭПР, рентгено-электронной и мессбауеровской спектроскопии, рентгеноструктурного анализа и др. В совокупности все представленные в сборнике работы дают на современном уровне характеристику уникального лунного вещества колонки и содержат новые данные об условиях формирования реголита, магматической эволюции лунных пород, роли процессов экзогенной переработки вещества на поверхности Луны.
