There was a time when killed or attenuated bacteria or viruses constituted the first vaccine generation. A partial understanding of how the immune system handles carbohydrate antigens has been the causative event that triggered the use of bacterial components such as capsular polysaccharide as one of the structural elements against which our bodies could mount potent humoral immune responses. These purified antigens represented vaccines pf the second generation.
