During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the way educated people viewed the natural world and their relationship to it underwent a radical transformation. Known as the Scientific Revolution, this change was based on the work of such scientists and philosophers as Francis Bacon, Robert Boyle, Nicolas Copernicus, Renй Descartes, Galileo Galilei, William Harvey, Johannes Kepler, Gottfried Leibniz, and John Locke. It reached its crowning achievement with the publication of Isaac Newton’s laws of motion in 1687.

The nineteenth century brought the world telephones, telegraphs, steamboats, electric lights, movies, sewing machines, cars, electric motors, the railroad, Ferris wheels, and aspirin. It was the age of invention, ending with the famous pronouncement in 1899 that “Everything that can be invented has been invented” (Charles H. Duell, Commissioner, U.S. Office of Patents). There are many candidates for the century’s greatest invention, but the winner may be the future itself. While history has seen individuals, such as Francis Bacon, who imagined a world different from that of their parents, most people throughout history did not. They have expected their professions, tools, and entertainments to be essentially the same as those of their parents and grandparents. In the nineteenth century this changed, as inventors and their inventions captured the public imagination.

The years between 1900 and 1949 were a time of extremes that included two world wars, a revolution in Russia, and the Depression in the United States. Scientific revolutions brought exciting new knowledge but also called into question the most basic concepts. New technologies and materials provided more deadly instruments of war but also lengthened lives and eased the demands on raw human muscle power. Exploration in this period echoed these extremes. Since many of the easier targets had already been reached, explorers headed for the poles, ventured deep beneath the ocean’s surface, and high into the atmosphere.

Grade 4-8-An attractive title that features photographs and drawings of flora and fauna, mainly of the deserts of northern Africa and the Middle East. Examples from the American Southwest and Australia are included, but not Arctic, Antarctic, or high-elevation regions. Brief explanatory paragraphs accompany the illustrations, which average five to a page, but they are in small type. The information is limited, but what is here-with its emphasis on camels and clothing and artifacts of Arabian people-is interesting and generally well presented. A browser's delight.

Grade 4-6-There are quite a few books for children on this subject, such as David Macaulay's Pyramid (Houghton, 1975), George Hart's Ancient Egypt (Harcourt, 1989), and Jacqueline Morley's An Egyptian Pyramid (Peter Bedrick, 1991), but most of them use drawings as illustrations, whereas Putnam's has full-color photographs. The best coverage is given to Egyptian tombs, but pyramids in Nubia, Mexico, and Central America are also described. In addition to sharing information on what is known about the Egyptian pyramids, Putnam also mentions unsolved riddles about them, such as how many workers built them, how the stones were moved, etc. Occasionally, the author makes conjectures about why things were done or how people felt. The information here is similar to that found in the titles mentioned above, but the photo-essay format is a novelty

The Encyclopedia of Architectural and Engineering Feats presents information about 200 significant structures from antiquity to the present. Items selected for inclusion are not necessarily the largest, but the authors state in the preface that they "have sought to identify those achievements that demonstrate discovery, creativity and innovation." Architecturally significant structures such as cathedrals, dams, train stations, and ancient stone works are included. The data presented are very up to date, including an entry on the building and destruction of the World Trade Center. Entries contain a page or two describing the historical context, architectural elements, materials used, significance, and, where relevant, recent uses and preservation schemes, followed by a brief list of further readings. Approximately half of the entries are accompanied by black-and-white photos. There are some inconsistencies with cross-references. For example, the entry for Hagia Sofia in Istanbul, Turkey, refers the reader to an entry on the Sultan Ahmet Mosque in the same city. However, the entry on the Sultan Ahmet Mosque refers the reader to the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem and the Masjed-e-Shah (Royal Mosque) in Isfahan, Iran, but not to Hagia Sofia.

Encyclopedia of Folk Heroes
Автор: Graham Seal

Год издания: 2001

Количество страниц: 347
Язык: english
Формат: CHM

Grade 9 Up-This volume describes folk heroes from all times and cultures, both individually and as groups ("Magicians," "Occupational Heroes," etc.). There are indexes by heroic type, country/culture, and a chronology of folk heroes by century, in addition to a general index and a detailed bibliography. Each entry includes cross-references and citations. Black-and-white illustrations are scattered throughout. Seal states up front that his book is selective; he emphasizes folklore and fairy tales, and doesn't include characters from mythology, scripture, or literature (although he does treat larger-than-life historical figures who've passed into folklore, such as Napoleon Bonaparte, George Washington, and a whole host of outlaws). Unfortunately, the book has flaws, most relating to the way the entries are written. They vary considerably in content. Some explain the background, some give a historical treatment, some analyze customs and traditions, while others delve into psychology. Some articles use quotes from scholars, rhymes, or songs. Some quickly summarize the stories, others include retellings in excruciating detail. As a result, the entries are inconsistent in substance, length, and value. While this volume can be interesting and informative, it can also be puzzling and frustrating, depending on a subject's treatment.

This is the perfect slang dictionary for young adults. Many of the 800 new expressions come from the Internet and submissions from college students. It is a dictionary in the strictest sense of the word. The 10,000 words are simply defined, with at least one usage example and the part of speech of the word. Some entries include pronunciation, but there is no indication of derivation or date of first use. The author has included terms that he believes are currently in frequent use.

This book brings together in one concise volume the most up-to-date information on materials, forms and parts, finishes, and processes utilized in industry. There is not a handbook currently on the market that incorporates as much materials information in one volume. The coverage of materials usage extends from military and aerospace materials to commercial (aircraft, automotive, electronics) and basic materials (wood, rubber, etc.). This encyclopedia represents an update of existing and new materials that have been invented or modified, as well as the basic materials. It is an invaluable desk reference for any engineer or scientist working with materials.
