As in other recent volumes, the several themes treated here are not directly related to each other, except for their common bond to physical acoustics.
The theme of the first two chapters is surface waves in acoustics and observation of the related acoustic radiation from plane and curved surfaces. The first chapter surveys the essential results obtained concerning acoustic surface waves on curved surfaces and relates them to the corresponding plane surface waves. Starting with a classification of surface and lateral waves on flat surfaces and a description of their properties, the chapter proceeds to discuss surface waves generated by sound scattering on curved surfaces. More general excitation mechanisms are mentioned briefly. The second chapter describes a group of acoustic wave problems that are particularly suitable for study by means of schlieren visualization. Previously regarded mainly as a teaching demonstration technique, schlieren visualization in acoustics is shown to be a significant scientific tool, since stroboscopic schlieren observation determines the positions of whole acoustic wave fronts emanating from surfaces that involve complicated phenomena not easily probed by usual acoustic measurement techniques. Seventy-three figures add greatly to the value of this chapter. |

Although engineering is a study entrenched firmly in belief of pragmatism, I have always believed its impact need not be limited to pragmatism. Pragmatism is not the boundaries that define engineering, just the (sometimes unforgiving) rules by which we sight our goals. This book studies two major problems of content-based video processing for a media-based technology: Video Object Plane (VOP) Extraction and Representation, in support of the MPEG-4 and MPEG-7 video standards, respectively. After reviewing relevant image and video processing techniques, we introduce the concept of Voronoi Ordered Spaces for both VOP extraction and representation to integrate shape information into low-level optimization algorithms and to derive robust shape descriptors, respectively. We implement a video object segmentation system with a novel surface optimization scheme that integrates Voronoi Ordered Spaces with existing techniques to balance visual information against predictions of models of a priori information. |

Народы этой, самой отдаленной от нас части света порабощены империалистическими державами. В начале эпохи империализма завершился раздел океанийско-австралийской области между Англией, Германией, Францией и Соединенными Штатами Америки. В дальнейшем, в ходе первой и второй мировых войн, «хозяева» отдельных частей этой области сменялись несколько раз: Германию вытеснила Япония, которая в свою очередь была оттеснена США. Некоторые из бывших колоний Англии с населением европейского происхождения превратились в самостоятельные доминионы (Австралия, Новая Зеландия), и их крупная буржуазия сама стала выступать как империалистическая сила, угнетающая коренное население. В последние годы и старые колониальные державы (Англия и Франция), и молодые капиталистические страны (Австралия и Новая Зеландия) быстро оттесняются на задний план самой сильной империалистической державой - Соединенными Штатами Америки.
Но кому бы ни принадлежали эти страны, их население испытывает жестокий гнет империалистов.
Борьба порабощенного колониального населения Австралии и Океании за свои права встречает сочувствие всего передового человечества.
Задача настоящей книги - рассказать о народах, населяющих Австралию и Океанию. Читатель найдет в ней сведения об этническом составе обитателей этих стран, об их происхождении, языках, хозяйстве, быте, общественном строе, культуре в прошлом и настоящем. В книге рассказывается и о старом, исторически сложившемся экономическом и культурном укладе народов этой части света, и о том, как старинный уклад был разрушен или разрушается колониальным империализмом.
В отличие от других томов серии «Народы мира» в настоящем томе значительно больше внимания уделено описанию быта, общественного строя и культуры народов Австралии и Океании в прошлом. Современное их положение охарактеризовано более кратко. Такое распределение материала вызвано двумя причинами. |

Aero Modeller (or Aeromodeller) was for decades the premier magazine for flying model aircraft. The first issue was dated November 1935. At its peak during the 1950s and 1960s it progessively absorbed a number of rivals, being called 'Aero Modeller now incorporating Model Aircraft' by February 1966, and Aero Modeller incorporating the Model Aeroplane Constructor and Model Aircraft by 1968.
Alongside the many features related to aeromodelling, each issue typically included one or two features on full-size aircraft. These usually centred around the famous series of scale plans for which the magazine was justly famous. Multi-part series such as 'Famous Biplanes' and 'Aircraft Described' ran across the centre pages and featured b+w photographs, detail sketches and a brief description alongside the multi-view scale drawings. In the early 1960s it also included a regular Q & A feature run by Air-Britain called 'Sign Post' which mostly concerned aircraft markings. This was later replaced by a series concentrating on aeromodelling. Some issues also included aircraft colour profiles on the inside back cover.
