This textbook consists of six chapters. The first chapter highlights the concept of liquid crystals, including chemical structure, phase classification, defect and texture, and continuum theory. It has been carefully written to meet the needs of readers who do not specialize in liquid crystals. The second chapter is related to the theoretical description of liquid crystalline polymers, networks, and gels, which deals with subjects such as the formation of liquid crystallinity in the polymer system, the phase transition and phase diagram, the molecular weight effect, chain conformation, physics properties, etc. In Chapter 3, the molecular engineering of liquid crystalline polymers is introduced. The molecular composition and the molecular weight play essential roles in the molecular design, which are reviewed in detail. In addition, some unusual liquid crystalline polymers are discussed. Chapter 4 is devoted to the phase identification of liquid crystalline polymers. The techniques involved cover polarizing microscopy, thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and other areas. Chapters 5 and 6 summarize the properties and applications of liquid crystalline polymers: Chapter 5 deals mainly with mechanical performance in fiber and composites; Chapter 6 presents the elasticity, viscosity and rheology of liquid crystalline polymers, as well as other important properties. |

Mexican War was the U.S. Army's first experience waging an extended conflict in a foreign land. This brief war is often overlooked by casual students of history since it occurred so close to the American Civil War and is overshadowed by the latter's sheer size and scope. Yet, the Mexican War was instrumental in shaping the geographical boundaries of the United States. At the conclusion of this conflict, the U.S. had added some one million square miles of territory. The Mexican War still has much to teach us about projecting force, conducting operations in hostile territory with a small force that is dwarfed by the local population, urban combat, the difficulties of occupation, and the courage and perseverance of individual soldiers. |

United States Army in World War II.
This volume is the second in a series which records the experiences of the Quartermaster Corps in World War II. Instead of the single theme of supply, emphasized in Volume I, a variety of activities are discussed, some of which — conservation, reclamation, and salvage operations, and industrial demobilization — are related to supply. Others such as laundry operations, training of dogs, and care of the dead, are wholly unrelated to the Quartermaster supply function but are nevertheless important to the Army. The volume stresses the multiplicity of the Corps' duties and, in the complexities of modern warfare, the Army's need for trained Quartermaster specialists and units to support combat troops. The narrative sets forth the policies and problems involved in procuring and training Quartermaster personnel and the manner in which the Quartermaster Corps operated in the zone of interior. |
