The successful preservation of an historic building, complex or city depends on the continued use and daily care that come with it. The possibility of continued use depends on the adaptation of the building to modern standards and practice of living, requiring changes in constructional or structural features. Conservation engineering is the process of understanding, interpreting and managing the architectural heritage to safely deliver it to posterity, enhancing private or public utility vis a vis minimum loss of fabric and significance. These two objectives are sometimes conflicting. With increasing global interest in conservation engineering it is essential to open the debate on more inclusive definitions of significance and on more articulated concepts of safety by use of acceptable and reliable technologies, integrating further the activity of all the professions involved in conservation. |

96 illustrations including drawings. HMS Hood was a battlecruiser of the Royal Navy, and considered the pride of the Royal Navy in the inter war period and during the early period of World War II. She was one of four Admiral class battlecruisers ordered in mid-1916 under the Emergency War Programme. Although the design was drastically revised after the Battle of Jutland, it was realized that there were serious limitations even to the revised design; for this reason, and because of evidence that the German battlecruisers that they were designed to counter were unlikely to be completed, work on her sister ships was suspended in 1917. As a result, Hood was Britain's last completed battlecruiser. She was named after the 18th century Admiral Samuel Hood. Hood had served in the Royal Navy for over two decades before her sinking at the hands of the German battleship Bismarck, on 24 May 1941. |

In this volume the work of Richard Keating is highlighted. Keating began his career at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in the late 1960s and became one of the youngest architects to achieve partnership. He established the firm's Houston office at the height of the Dallas and Houston development booms and quickly rose to prominence as a designer.
In 1986 Keating assumed control of the Los Angeles office which went on to produce an incredible volume of work and win numerous design awards over the following years.
